Area Guide / Northern New Jersey / Bergen / Bogota

Town:Bogota

Bogota is a borough in Bergen County with a population of approximately 8,300 residents. Bogota was created on November 14, 1894, and was named in honor of the Bogert family, which had been the first to occupy the area. There are a variety of housing options in the borough, including single-family detached dwellings, multi-family structures and condominiums.

Bogota is located between Interstate 80 and Route 4, both of which eventually lead to the George Washington Bridge and New York City to the east, and Pennsylvania to the west. Bogota is located along the Hackensack River, adjacent to the City of Hackensack. Several bridges cross the river to Hackensack, making the many services and businesses of nearby cities very accessible to residents of Bogota.

Downtown Bogota is located along Main Street, which becomes Degraw Avenue in neighboring Teaneck. Downtown Bogota has several banks, a pharmacy, small eateries and convenience stores. There are several pizza shops scattered throughout town, as well. South of Main Street, along the Hackensack River, is a secondary commercial area with a coffee house, several restaurants and a pharmacy.

Students in Bogota are educated in the Bogota Public Schools. Schools within the district are E. Roy Boxby School and Lillian M. Steen School, which serve students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Bogota High School, with a 2005 enrollment of 496 students, serves all students in seventh grade through twelfth grade. In addition to Bogota Public Schools, Saint Joseph’s School, a Roman Catholic parochial school, is located in Bogota. Saint Joseph’s educates students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
