Carlstadt is a 4.2 square mile borough located in Bergen County, less than ten miles from Manhattan. Commuters to New York City can access New Jersey Transit Trains from nearby Rutherford or can ride the bus from many park and rides located throughout Carlstadt and neighboring East Rutherford. Carlstadt is an older suburb that developed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Many of the homes are from this period and housing options include single-family homes, multi-family homes and condominiums.

Carlstadt is a diverse and thriving borough with a tight sense of community. The 2000 census counted 5,917 residents. There are many places of worship, recreational activities for younger residents, and community events that bring residents together. There are several commercial areas in Carlstadt, each with its own unique stores and services. Along Hackensack Street one can find Italian Restaurants, Pizza Parlors, local taverns as well as a fish market. Grocery stores, pharmacies, banks and service stations can be found along Paterson Avenue and Hoboken Road. Carlstadt is located near the Secaucus Outlets, as well.

For entertainment, the Meadowlands Sports Complex is located a few miles to the east. The Meadowlands is home to several national sports franchises, as well as many collegiate football and basketball games, and a premier Horse Racing facility. There are also several large hotels with banquet facilities, restaurants, and conference facilities.

Carlstadt Public Schools serves students in kindergarten though eighth grade. Schools in the district are Lincoln School for grades K-5 and Washington School for grades K-8.
High School students attend the Henry P. Becton Regional High School in East Rutherford, which serves high school students from both Carlstadt and East Rutherford.
