Area Guide / Northern New Jersey / Bergen / Demarest

Town:Demarest

Less than twenty miles from New York City, Demarest is a borough located in Bergen County, and has a population of nearly 5,000 residents. It is a residential community with many parks, historic buildings and single family homes. Commuters enjoy Demarest’s close proximity to the Palisades Parkway and the George Washington Bridge.

The Borough of Demarest was named for the Demarest family, originally known as the “des Marets”. The Demarest were French Huguenots who moved to Bergen County in the late 1600’s. Dutch traders soon followed and the area began to flourish. On April 8, 1903, the Borough of Demarest was established from part of surrounding Harrington Township. The first mayor of Demarest was John H. Z. Demarest.

Today, Demarest is a quiet haven for those seeking a reprieve from fast paced city life. Demarest is not a center of business, industry, retail or transportation. Demarest is a quiet community with many parks, as well as a few businesses, which provide locals with the essentials of daily life. It has a full time police force, as well as a fire department and rescue squad.

Demarest Public Schools are highly regarded and serve students through eighth grade in County Road School, Luther Lee Emerson School and Demarest Middle School. High school students attend Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest along with students from neighboring Haworth and Closter.

Residents and community leaders have worked hard to keep Demarest a quiet and safe enclave through the years. Demarest remains this way today, and its real estate attracts buyers from around the state.
