Emerson offers a different pace of life than much of Bergen County. During the evening, residents can be seen walking dogs, talking with neighbors and working in yards. Downtown Emerson is centered on the train station located at Linwood Avenue and Kinderkamack Road. This is the location of the traffic signal, as well. Small shops and eateries surround the intersection. Residents seeking more shopping options can travel to one of the many large malls and big box retail centers located within a short drive.

Emerson is served by the Passaic Valley line of New Jersey Transit with a station located at Linwood Avenue and Kinderkamack Road in the center of town. New Jersey Transit offers one-stop service to Penn Station in Manhattan with connections to other New Jersey Transit stations available at the Hoboken Terminal. Emerson is also located near the Garden State Parkway and the Palisades Parkway.

The Emerson School District serves students from Pre-kindergarten through high school. Schools in the district are Emerson Memorial School for those grades PreK-2, Patrick M. Villano Elementary School serving grades 3-6 and Emerson Jr./Sr. High School for those in grades 7-12. All schools have an excellent reputation throughout New Jersey.
