With close to 7,600 residents, Caldwell is situated approximately 16 miles from New York City and covers roughly 1.2 square miles of northwestern Essex County. Caldwell offers its residents a quiet atmosphere away from the city, but is still in close commuting distance to New York City and is only a short drive from Newark, New Jersey. There are a handful of stores in Caldwell, including a bank, nail salon, dry cleaner and clothing stores. Most of these stores are located on Main Street, which his also home to the town’s restaurants and a movie theater. Residents also enjoy the variety of shopping, dining and entertainment options located throughout the neighboring towns in Essex County.

Students in Caldwell attend the Caldwell-West Caldwell Public School system, which is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and a high school and serves students from both Caldwell and neighboring West Caldwell. Washington, Jefferson, and Wilson elementary schools are located in West Caldwell. Lincoln Elementary is located in Caldwell. These schools begin with kindergarten and end with fifth grade. All students in the district attend Grover Cleveland Middle School in Caldwell from grade six to eight. All students them move to James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell from grades nine to twelve.
