With a population of 11,200 residents, West Caldwell is located approximately sixteen miles from New York City and six miles northwest of Newark, New Jersey. West Caldwell covers 5.1 square miles of land in Essex County and is situated about sixty miles from the Jersey Shore. Major highways in or near West Caldwell include Route 80 and Route 46, as well as the Garden State Parkway. 

West Caldwell offers its residents a variety of outdoor or indoor recreational activities and entertainment. There are four main shopping areas and three main industrial parks located in West Caldwell. These commercial districts offer a variety of stores and services, including retail stores, automotive shops, restaurants and nightlife. Residents who enjoy the outdoors spend time at Crane Park where the town puts on a variety of entertainment, including concerts, plays and sports games. West Caldwell also offers residents two municipal pools. 

Students in West Caldwell attend the Caldwell-West Caldwell Public School system, which is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and a high school and serves students from both West Caldwell and neighboring Caldwell. Washington, Jefferson, and Wilson elementary schools are located in West Caldwell. Lincoln Elementary is located in Caldwell. These schools begin with kindergarten and end with fifth grade. All students in the district attend Grover Cleveland Middle School in Caldwell from grade six to eight. All students them move to James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell from grades nine to twelve.
