Howell is a township in Monmouth County that is home to approximately 50,000 residents. Howell is located in the south-central part of the county, and it is currently the largest municipality in Monmouth County. Howell was incorporated as a township in 1801 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. There are a variety of entertainment options and recreational activities for residents living in Howell. The Manasquan Reservoir provides residents the options to fish, jog, bike, bird watch, and walk their dogs. There is also a nature exhibit on the premises where visitors can view the local wildlife. Turkey Swamp Park also offers activities and trails where visitors can horseback ride. Six Flags Great Adventure is also located nearby and provides endless amounts of entertainment through their multiple roller coasters and attractions. Recently interest in the township has increased due to Howell’s involvement with a recently-filmed and popular movie. Scenes from the 2005 remake of War of the Worlds were filed in Howell Township. An area neighborhood called Ardena Acres was recreated as a set at Universal Studios in Hollywood and was left standing after the film’s production was complete. In terms of education, the Howell Township Public Schools serve students from kindergarten through the eighth grade. There are ten elementary schools and three middle schools in this district. High school students have the option of attending Howell High School, Freehold High School, or Colts Neck High School since all three schools belong to the Freehold Regional High School District. As an alternative to public schooling, Monmouth Academy is a private school that serves students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade, and Saint Veronica’s School is a Catholic School for students up until the eighth grade.
